Travertine Technical Characteristics
Chemical composition: the travertine is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin, that is originated  from the precipitation of CaCo3 coming from rich waters or over-pressure of Ca (HCO3) 2 soluble in the water.

The vacuolar characteristic of the travertine, it is due to the fact that during the sedimentation of the period of the Pliocene, in the Tivoli and Guidonia travertino basin and it was rich of vegetation that was imprisoned and crusted by the continuous sedimentation of CaCO3. These vegetables, going to decomposition, they left some holes that contributed to give origin to the vacuolar characteristic of the travertine.

What is the coloring in the travertines?

If a CaCO3 had the possibility to sediment without be disturbed by external agents, the travertine would assume a really white coloration, but this particular condition is rarely verified. The sedimentation of the CaCO3 is very often disturbed by external agents, as for example, temporary flood of a course of water, that alters the characteristics of it making to assume to the travertine various colors, from the straw yellow one to the light brown one, to the brown dark color.

Characteristics. The darkest travertines have superior technical characteristics to those of the clearest travertines. There are some types of dark travertine that have a coefficient of usury for Friction frightening, equal and sometimes straight inferior to that of the said marbles properly. To conclude these are really  characteristic of compactness, toughness and elasticity and at the same time, these make travertine a proper material for the employment in the most varied uses.
